The Compelling Motives of Imperialism The presence of Europe in Africa in the late nineteenth century was one of extreme power. The countries of France, Britain, and Germany had especially large claims to the African continent during this time. The motives of imperialism for these countries greatly define Europe at this time. Insatiable desires for economic markets, power and political struggles, the motivating belief in Social Darwinism, and the European idea of superiority were the driving forces at the European home front in the late nineteenth century. Many of the causes for imperialism in Africa were evident in Joseph Conrad’s turn of the century novel, Heart of Darkness. Successful domination of Africa was not attainable prior to the eighteen hundreds. The obstacles of travel and disease were too powerful to overcome. However, with the development of the steamship and the protection from malaria in the form of quinine, Europeans tackled Africa with a renewed energy (Sanderson â€Å"Imperialism notes†). A European council congregated in 1885 and drew up the Berlin Act, which was responsible for the carving of Africa into pieces of land for the major imperialistic powers in Europe (Lehmann â€Å"The Scramble for Africa†). Political and nationalistic rivals were fueled and each European power desired to prosper greater than their competitors did. Political goals were often achieved through imperialism. Countries competed for â€Å"strategic passages† and â€Å"overseas bases† in locations throughout Africa (Lehmann â€Å"European Imperialism). The goals of achieving the most power and wealth from various regions throu gh imperialistic measures were realized during the age of imperialism. Film and Classicism

Film scholars have long divided films into three stylistic categories: Realism, Classicism, and Formalism. The purpose of style-the way in which motion picture form molds content-depends on how the filmmaker approaches the narrative formation of the story he has decided to tell, the goal of a classicist is to tell a story in the best way possible. When I see films I like to escape my own reality so I’m choosing to write about Classicism. From the realism and formalism stand point, the classical style falls somewhere in between and is the more dominant way of telling the story, meaning this is what most film styles are, so it reaches a larger audience. Although classicism falls in between the genres of realism and formalism, most classicism films will lean more towards either realism or formalism (Giannetti, 2008). Realism, unlike classicism, is all about showing the truth. A realist will try to carry on the illusion that their film is an impartial reflection of the real world. Realism is about everyday people in everyday situations, for instance a documentary or your sister’s wedding filmed by your uncle Ted. The director wants the audience to feel like the events have actually happened and get inside the characters mind. Classicism, on the other hand, is fictional but it reminds you of the world we know, it’s all about idyllic storytelling. The narrative classical is typically based on a conflict between a central character who creates a problem and the adversary who resists it. Most films in this form begin with wanting to know how the lead character is going to get what he/she wants in the face of substantial opposition. The characters in classicism cinema are appealing and romanticized and audiences are encouraged to identify with the characters’ values and goals (Giannetti, 2008). The characters in the classical movie are played by actors and actresses instead of unknown people. (Giannetti, 2008) And at the other end of the scale we have formalism. Formalistic film makers sometimes do not even have characters and avoid a story all together. They have no desire to show reality. Formalism wants to show their own image of the world, sometimes to the extreme where it’s just abstract images and music to create an emotional and psychological experience. Classicism on the other hand, has images that are determined by the relevance of the story rather than the desire for authenticity, as is realism, or a desire for formal beauty, as formalism desires. Film critic, Herman G. Weinberg, describes the connection between the story and film flawlessly when he states, â€Å"The way a story is told is part of that story. You can tell the same story badly or well; you can also tell it well enough or magnificently. It depends on who is telling the story† (Giannetti, 2008, p. 8). Classism style rarely calls attention to itself, as realism and formalism styles do. (Giannetti, 2008) Yet, classicism is the leading style in films, it focuses on the story the film is trying to portray to the audience. Creating a realistic world and telling the story through an hidden lens to entertain an audience is the main reason I like this type of film. I want to get lost in the characters and feel like I’m taking part in the story.

Most Of The High School Students Follow The Footsteps Of

Most of the high school students follow the footsteps of the older generation. After four year of High School comes four years of undergraduate and after undergraduate degree pursuit of master’s degree. However, the timeline isn’t quite as organized. As more students are encouraged to apply to colleges, more colleges and Universities are being founded. However most of the major public Universities such as Penn State, Rutgers and Indiana University of Pennsylvania gain their share of students through transferring students. According to the article published in USA Today, students are taking longer than 4 years to graduate college and the main reasons behind it are change of majors, lack of advising and planning, change of Universities and†¦show more content†¦Change of Universities is one of the reasons why students take longer to graduate. Mostly because the credits that are offered in one institution are not counted in the other institution. Thus it is hard to keep track of what credits or courses the student has take during the non traditional 2-year institution. One of the suggestions made to community colleges to ameliorate the transferring process of the students is close advising and creation of a goal plan. The lack of a goal erases the sense of duty and perseverance in students. If student don’t have a plan, they attend college, attend social gathering and parties, however fail to gain the knowledge or sense of direction the college provides for individuals who take advantage of advising and career development. In addition to frequently changing their majors, the transfer students face the experience that is referred to as the â€Å"transfer shock†. This term refers to the academic struggles that transfer students face after the transition period. â€Å"Transfer students may experience a sharp decline in GPA the semester after transferring.† (McCormick pg. 2) Because of the declines grades, the transfer students are discouraged to continue and persevere through a typical struggle of a college student. There are three types of an organizational structure in an organization: Hierarchical Matrix Horizontal Nestle follows a decentralized organizational structure which is organized through matrix structure. It allows the employees at the subordinate level to enjoy a high- level of independence. The majority of the decisions are made at headquarter but daily operations are carried by the subordinate branches. The responsibility of the organization is left with the local units at the different places. Nestle has developed from a small organization to a multinational company. It has adjusted itself in the diversified environment to achieve the long term objectives. Nestle is growing continuously in size as well as in structure which has helped in achieving growth. Nestle Organizational Chart The organizational structure of Nestle is divided in 3 types which are: Top level management: the top-level management is responsible to frame the policies for an organization. It is the final authority who takes the decision for an organization. They lay down the budget for the organization and divide the power among the middle level of management. Middle- Level Management The role of the middle-level management is to implement the policies which are lay down by the top-level manager. There duty is to allocate the task to the lower management. They have to keep a check on their working to achieve the better results (Staw, 2006). Lower Level Management There duty in an organization is to follow the directions which are given by the managers. Lower level manager has a duty to maintain good relations with organization. HR manager plays a significant role by managing the employees and the differences which are not in the interest of the organization. The major difficulty is in managing the organization under the given resources. The HR intervention necessary for an organization are as follows: It is essential for a medium-sized organization to limit the size of the employees as per the requirement. Employing the people as per the organizational structure is essential. Secondly there is a necessity in an organization to establish the responsibility on each employee to achieve the sustainable result under adverse situations. A manager has to play multiple roles in the organization while dealing with the employees which are already facing difficulties. Thirdly a manager has a duty to craft policies as per the current requirements. The organization faces various challenges due to the competitive environment. Under the difficult situation a good organizational structure helps in retrieving the maximum result. A medium sized organization face challenges from the other competitor. In such a situation the manager has to restructure the organization looking onto the current situation. HRM practices varies from organization to organization under such situation a manger in an advertising company has to take progressive decisions keeping in mind the welfare of the employees. Example: restructuring is an essential to procure the maximum productivity. In the case of General Motors it decided to shut down 21 Plants due to constant loses in the year 1991. It laid-off 74,000 employees to counter the losses. GM is the motor giant and it has a successful history. The organization has adopted downsizing as the restructuring method to achieve the objectives. Downsizing is a common restructuring policy which is adopted as a tool to manage the internal organization.GM has undergone restructuring in the year 2009 which is due to bankruptcy. It is a tool used by the management to lever the asset of the organization (Weston, 2003). The recent successful merger is an example of the corporate restructuring where Dell Corporation merged EMC into the organization to compete with the global competitors like HP and Lenovo the main aim behind the merger is to deal with the contingencies the companies are facing and to overcome against them together. Dell has the best supply chain services whereas EMC has a cutting edge over the technology. It is called as the largest restructuring in the year 2016. It strengthens the inner capacity of the organization and helps in achieving the objectives. There is no successful formula for restructuring the company. But at the time of constant losses it is necessary for an organization to restructure its internal strength to increase the overall productivity. While still becoming accustoned to his father's remarriage, thriteen-year-old Todd and a friend set out to prove they observed a burglary no one believes happened. They had gone on a canoeing trip and discovered two men acting funny on the other side of the lake. Todd and Kevin witnessed what appears to be a burgluary. When they returned home with the tale of robbery, no one believes them. Todd's dad and stepmom want to give the boys the benefit of the doubt, however the police are skeptical and the owner of the house rudely denies that anything is missing. Todd sets out to prove he is right. Todd and Kevin decide to gather evidence by taking pictures. They are determined to solve the puzzling crime on their own. Todd and Kevin poke around and uncover evidence of not only the burglary but also a slick travel-club scam. They overhear the burglars plan a murder. The boys follow the burglary and uncover three murders. The boys devise a plan to steal the burglars canoe from them so as to trap them on Sanctuary Island with the dead body. Todd's parents get worried when the boys are discovered missing and call the police. The police arrive just in time to save Todd and Kevin from becoming the burglars next victims. The police retrieve a body from the canoe and get medical help in time to save the man. Todd and Kevin save the day and become local heros. Bibliography
